Psychological Assessment

Autism Assessments
Bright Eyes offers comprehensive diagnostic assessment for those wondering if they or their child may meet criteria for autism. A trained psychologist uses both the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview- Revised (ADI-R) as part of the assessment, which is considered the gold standard in autism diagnosis. Other tools, such as the MIGDAS-2 and various adaptive functioning questionnaires may also be used as part of this assessment.
ADHD Assessments
Bright Eyes offers formal comprehensive assessment of ADHD for children, teens and adults. This typically involves a semi-structured diagnostic interview as well as parent, teacher or self-report questionnaire/s such as the Conners-4, Child Behaviour Check List (CBCL), Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning (BRIEF-2), or the Brown Executive Function/Attention Scales (Brown EF/A), dependent on age. Psychologists may also use a clinical behaviour observation to inform their diagnosis. Further assessment may be recommended by your psychologist to determine strengths and weaknesses or to differentiate from other disorders.
Cognitive and Neuropsychological Assessments
Often referred to as IQ or intelligence assessments, a cognitive assessment may be requested to help identify giftedness, an intellectual disability, or as part of a broader assessment (such as assessment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). These assessments can identify areas of cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and contribute to an understanding of how we might best support an individual. Bright Eyes commonly uses the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales for Early Childhood (Early SB-5), the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence (WPPSI-V) and Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children (WISC-V).
Where needed, the psychologist may utilise other assessment tools to measure specific components of neurocognitive functioning, such as executive functioning or memory.
Behavioural Assessments
Bright Eyes practitioners specialise in assessment and treatment of behavioural concerns. A psychologist or behaviour therapist can work with the individual to assess behaviours which are causing them difficulty in their daily life - such as family strain, social difficulties, learning difficulties, or harm to self or others. Assessment may range from screening tools to comprehensive functional behaviour assessment, depending on your child's needs.
Developmental Assessments
Paediatricians or other health professionals working with your child might recommend assessment to determine if your child is meeting developmental milestones. Parents or educators may also refer children for these assessments. A psychologist can work with you and your child to determine if there is a developmental delay present, for which your child may then be recommended early intervention supports. Various assessment tools may be used, depending on what the psychologist feels is most appropriate.
Educational Assessments
An educational assessment may be recommended if your child is experiencing learning difficulties, or if you or your child’s teachers would like more information regarding particular areas of academic strength or difficulty. Bright Eyes uses the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (Third Edition; WIAT-III) to measure educational domains such as language, reading, written expression, and mathematical ability.
How much do assessments cost? Many assessments at Bright Eyes have a set cost, and others vary depending on the complexity and amount of time required. Please contact our clinic to discuss details further.
